Below are some common questions we have been asked regarding cost and assistance, along with our answers that may help to explain the process of adoption:
“If I place my baby for adoption, is it free to receive counseling?”
Yes. We know this is an emotional time and talking about your feelings is essential to processing them. There are resources available to you free of cost, and your adoption caseworker will be available to help you take advantage of those services.
“Will I be responsible for medical bills?”
No, you are not responsible for any medical bills. If you have insurance, the adoptive family will pay for the amount that your insurance does not cover. If you do not have insurance, your adoption caseworker will help to apply for Medicaid for you. Our Adoption Agency will assist with making sure you are able to receive prenatal care throughout your pregnancy. We will work closely with the hospital you choose to deliver at as well, helping you to create a hospital plan to make your stay perfectly fit your wishes when your due date arrives.
“Do I have to pay for a lawyer or court fees?”
No. You can either choose your own lawyer or we will suggest one for you. Your attorney will walk you through the legal process and make sure that you understand your rights and understand what you are agreeing to. He or she is on your side, and will have your best interests in mind throughout the entire adoption process from consenting to the adoption to helping you utilize your allotted living expenses. These legal services are free for you.
“What if I have to buy more groceries than usual, or take time off of work?”
There are certain things that are necessary to purchase during pregnancy, but as a birthmother considering adoption, these expenses are covered by the adoptive family. Some examples of what you may use your living expenses to help pay for are your rent and utilities, groceries and maternity clothes. Your adoption caseworker will work with you to make sure you receive funds for these living expenses.
“Are there any hidden fees that I will have to pay for after the adoption is complete? What if I want post-adoption counseling and contact with the adoptive family?”
There are no fees that you will need to pay after the adoption is complete. If you would like to seek counseling after the adoption, there will be no cost to you for that service as well. We can help you to utilize, free of charge:
- Post-adoption counseling
- Referrals to helpful post-adoption resources
- We can facilitate communication with the adoptive family for you if you wish, or if you and your adoptive family are comfortable you may exchange phone numbers and communicate directly
- And more
“Will there ever be a situation in which an adoption would cost me money?”
No. It’s always free to place a baby for adoption, regardless of your situation. It does not matter how far along in your pregnancy you are, what your background is like, or how often you are in contact with your adoption caseworker. Placing a baby for adoption if free for you, the birthmother, no matter what.
“Is there anything else I need to know about the cost of placing a baby for adoption?”
A common reason a woman may choose to place her child for adoption is because she is not financially prepared to care for a baby. When you choose Building Blocks to help you create an adoption plan, we help you to gain access to living expenses that will ease your current financial burdens.
You will receive all of the services we offer for free. This means you can receive free counseling before, during, and after the adoption. We will make sure you do not pay for any prenatal care you receive. You will also receive free legal care.
“Why is it free to place a child for adoption?”
We understand that an unplanned pregnancy is stressful. Choosing to create an adoption plan is one of the most emotionally challenging decisions you will ever have to make. It is a decision made with love and sacrifice that will give the beautiful gift of a child to an adoptive family. You are already making physical, mental and emotional sacrifices and you shouldn’t have to make financial sacrifices as well.
The cost of pregnancy and childbirth can be very costly, not to mention the cost of raising the baby. This is a common reason many women choose adoption for their unplanned pregnancy. By creating an adoption plan, they are able to have all prenatal and hospital costs covered for them, as well as ensuring that their baby will be taken care of.
